FENStatS Newsletter - Q1/2025

Dear FENStatS Members,

I am delighted to announce that significant progress has been made in organizing the first European FENStatS meeting together within the Italian Statistical Society meeting. The conference will be held in Rome at the University of La Sapienza from the 22th to the 25th of June, 2026. I would be very pleased if you considered your participation to make this conference a great success! Detailed information will be added in the next issues of our Newsletter.

I would like also to announce that the FENStatS Executive Committee has resolved applications to organize FENStatS-specific sessions at national and international conferences, and travel grant applications for young statisticians. Please note that a new call for applications will be issued at the end of this year.

I also highlight the upcoming 4th ERC Webinar with grantees in Statistics, scheduled for April 10th. This event underscores our commitment to fostering statistical research and securing ERC grants for European statisticians.

Finally, in line with our strategic goal of promoting responsible data use and combating misinformation, I would like to announce that FENStatS has promoted a recent submission of a European project on Statistical Literacy. I would like to publicly congratulate the FENStatS statistical literacy-working group for leading this initiative.

With warm regards to all members of our societies,

Lola Ugarte
FENStatS President

The Executive Committee of the Statistical Society of Italy (SIS) has formally approved the adoption of the FENStatS Ethical Code, marking an important milestone in promoting ethical standards within the statistical community. This code, developed by FENStatS, sets out clear guidelines for ensuring integrity, transparency, and professionalism in statistical practices. To make the code accessible to a wider audience, the Italian translation will soon be published on the SIS website

Statistical Society of Slovenia

On Nov 26, 2024, the Young Section of the Statistical Society of Slovenia, prepared an open online discussion meeting where Andrej Srakar presented a recent 2024 article by Guido W. Imbens and Yiqing Xu entitled "LaLonde (1986) after Nearly Four Decades: Lessons Learned". The article presents recent assessment of causality for observational data and recommends necessary statistical tests and procedures to extract accurate causal effects. The audience, which consisted of about 13 section members, discussed the article and noted it is very useful in their study work. Next discussion meetings of the Young Section are under schedule.

The Statistical Society of Slovenia engages actively in preparations of instructions for activities to enhance statistical literacy among children for kindergarten and school teachers that soon will be available and circulated.

The latest newsletter of the Statistical Society of Slovenia has been published with interesting contributions about the activities of the society members, and is available here.

In addition, the Statistical Society of Slovenia and the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia are applying for the 9th European Statistics Competition. (link)
